How to achieve the best result after facial surgery

Preparation is key, as soon as you know that you may be having an operation, it is helpful to think about how you can be as healthy and as fit as possible for surgery. You should get good rest, eat well, take gentle exercise and keep hydrated. Caffeine and alcohol consumption should be limited. Fitter patients recover from surgery more quickly and experience fewer complications.

it is important that you read through the procedure information consent forms so that you have a clear understanding and ask any questions that you may have prior to your surgery day. If you feel prepared for surgery then you will arrive for your procedure feeling positive, which in turn will reduce any anxiety and encourage a stress-free recovery.

Treatments to prepare the skin for surgery

PRP treatment (3 session course)

PRP, also known as Platelet Rich Plasma, is a totally natural, non-surgical treatment that uses the healing power of your own blood to regenerate your skin and encourage new collagen. PRP treatment boosts the skin’s radiance and luminosity, improves texture and reduces the visible signs of ageing. The skin will feel more hydrated, firmer and more elastic.

During an PRP treatment, you will first have a small amount of blood – 15mls – taken from your arm just as you would in a blood test. This blood is then placed in a centrifuge for five minutes to separate the red blood cells from the clear liquid called plasma and the platelets.

Platelets play a vital role in regenerating our skin, releasing growth factors that work to heal damaged or ageing tissues, including our skin cells. Your face will be cleaned, and four tiny punctures made to allow the insertion of a flexible, blunt-ended cannula to gently distribute the platelet rich plasma under the skin of the cheeks and around the mouth.

Skinade MD pre + post care programme

During the post-surgery healing process, for your body to have what it needs to respond the best it can, Mr Olivier Amar recommends you consider the Skinade MD pre + post care programme.

The Skinade MD pre and post care programme has been specifically designed to help patients prepare and recover from surgery and lowering associated downtime. Skinade MD Pre + Post case programme works by triggering the wound healing response ahead of surgery and targeting specific concerns associated with surgical or invasive procedures such as:

  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Scarring
  • Bleeding
  • Healing
  • Inflammation

The programme consists of liquid and powder sachets, capsules and a sublingual spray enabling the ingredients to be consumed with optimal efficacy. For ease of use the product comes with a specific tick box planner card that explains the daily protocol and tracks the full 45-day programme. All you have to do is follow the directions.

Aerolase Neo laser for skin rejuvenation and tone improvement

Aerolase Neo laser is the ideal partner to facial surgery. Neo laser offers a non-invasive, gentle treatment for overall skin rejuvenation, and addresses everything from hyperpigmentation and sun damage, broken capillaries, rosacea and redness, melasma and skin quality improvement.

The laser treatment works by delivering pulses of light energy to the targeted areas of the skin. This energy helps stimulate collagen production and promotes remodeling of the skin’s underlying structure. By stimulating collagen, the treatment can help improve skin elasticity, smooth out rough texture and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

How best to support your recovery

Stopping smoking

Certain lifestyle factors can increase the risk of complications during and after your surgery. The most common impact of smoking before your surgery is that it increases your chances of developing an infection and inhibits your body’s natural healing processes. Smoking reduces the amount of oxygen in your blood and healing tissues and increases the risk of breathing and heart problems during and after your procedure.

We insist that all patients stop smoking and using nicotine products at least six weeks before surgery and do not commence for at least two weeks after surgery, until the healing is complete. Aside from the risks directly related to the surgical procedure, tobacco can be responsible for respiratory or cardiac complications during anaesthesia.

In the days after surgery

In the days after surgery, it is helpful to think about how you can be as healthy and as fit as possible for your recovery. You should get good rest, eat well and keep hydrated. Walk gently every day and resume normal activity when you feel comfortable. Caffeine and alcohol consumption should be limited. Fitter patients recover from surgery more quickly and experience fewer complications.

Bruising and swelling

You can expect bruising and swelling after surgery, this generally disappears between two and three weeks following surgery. It is better to keep your head up to reduce swelling, we advise sleeping with extra pillows to keep your head raised for the first few days after surgery.

Nelsons Arnicare Arnica Cream is included in our post-surgery skincare package via Get Harley, this can be used at any point before surgery and during your recovery, to support and reduce bruising and swelling.

Follow your after surgery care recommendations

Before leaving the clinic, you will be given discharge paperwork. Mr Amar will write to you by email the day after your surgery summarising your aftercare recommendations, received verbally on your day of surgery.

Under our supervision, we instruct Get Harley to contact you by email or WhatsApp with Mr Amar’s post-surgery skincare recommendations and instructions on how to purchase these products. We use Get Harley, a skincare concierge service to assist us in providing you skincare regimens to help support your aftercare.

Attend your post-operative appointments

It is your duty to come for nurse and follow ups when appointments are given. In order to monitor healing it is mandatory to attend post-operative appointment as part of your care. Failing to follow post-operative appointments may impact your results and final outcome.

Consider laser treatment to support healing and scars

Post-surgery scar laser treatment, 3 sessions by Aerolase Neo to support healing, to help flatten scars and reduce redness and thickness. Mr Olivier Amar recommends this treatment course to support healing and compliment your results. You are welcome to opt out of this package if you wish, however it is recommended that you proceed with 3 sessions post-surgery, beginning 2-4 weeks after surgery.

Protect your incisions from the sun

You must protect your scar area from the sun for at least 2 months using sun cream with a SPF of 50+ and Kelo-cote Advanced Formula Scar Gel.

Return to normal activities and exercise when you feel ready

Patients who undergo facial procedures usually return to normal activities after a week to ten days. We recommend patients return to gentle exercise as soon as they feel comfortable to do so, but nothing strenuous for three weeks following surgery.

Though there was absolutely no pressure, I decided to go ahead with a mini lower face and neck lift. Throughout my treatment I was very impressed with Mr Amar’s professionalism and attentiveness. I would have no hesitation at going back to him.

What our facial surgery patients say

Patient: Female, aged 48

Procedure: Upper and lower blepharoplasty plus fat transfer to orbital area under general anaesthesia (TIVA).

“Mr Olivier Amar is, in my view, one of the most talented surgeons specialising in anti-ageing. I still remember that rare feeling I had when I met Mr Amar; I was sure he was the right surgeon for me. I found him to be refreshingly honest, and in agreement with me, that surgery was the only way to ‘turn back the clock’. After my recent procedure, I can attest to the naturalness of the outcome.  I couldn’t be more pleased.”

Patient: Female, aged 63

Procedure: Mini pinch face lift and fat transfer to face under general anaesthesia (TIVA)

“I had my procedure a mini face lift and fat transfer 4 weeks in and I am thrilled with the results.  From the first consultation I had the up most confidence in Mr Amar , he understood exactly what I was aiming for, and explained everything that was going to happen putting my mind at ease. Everything went exceeding well on the day of my surgery, and apart from feeling a bit groggy and swollen I felt fine.

I rested for the week after surgery and with improvements in the swelling happening every day and by the end of week I was back to work. Friends and colleagues keep telling how well I look, have lost weight. So pleased that friends have  noticed a difference but not putting down to surgery, which shows me how natural the surgery looks.

I absolutely recommend Mr Olivier Amar. Such a skilled and talented surgeon who is easy to talk to. Who completely understands the aesthetics of facial surgery.”
